They typically provoke radiating pain and are often involved in pain syndromes. For example, trigger points in the lateral gluteal muscles can cause pain throughout the leg or cause headaches from the cervical spine region.

Trigger points are hypersensitive areas in a palpably tense bundle of muscle fibers that can cause pain during movement and even at rest.

TRIGGER POINT & DRY NEEDLING

We therefore use dry needling as an effective complement to manual trigger point therapy. This technique is clearly different from acupuncture and is mainly used in the treatment of pain syndromes, in sports physiotherapy and in orthopaedic rehabilitation. We can use it to release specific trigger points, improve local blood circulation in the muscles and reduce inflammatory reactions.

The origin of trigger points is an overloading of the muscles, usually due to everyday and professional activities or sporting activities. Other causes include accidents, operations or diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

Dry needling is combined with electrical stimulation of the affected muscles. In certain cases, this can enhance the effects of deep dry needling.

There are 3 different methods of dry needling:

Also known as intramuscular stimulation (IMS): a thin, sterile, disposable needle is inserted precisely into the trigger point that is responsible for the current discomfort.

Also known as superficial afferent stimulation (SAS): here the needle is only applied superficially.

Deep Dry Needling

 Superficial Dry Needling

INTRAMUSCULAR ELECTRICAL STIMULATION (IMES)
